The Hub
WHAT IS SCOUTING kNOT?

No it’s not a typographical error. The Scout Association have recently published an online guide to debunk some of the age old myths which have previously surrounded the 102 year old organisation. An organisation that boasts some 28 million members worldwide.

At a time of year when thoughts turn to new beginnings, a new year and new resolutions, the local Bothwell Scout group are offering adults the chance to give something back to the community while getting lots back for yourself.
Bothwell Scouts, whilst being based in Bothwell, provide Scouting for over 80+ young people from throughout North and South Lanarkshire on a weekly basis. With members not only from Bothwell but from Tannochside, Uddingston, Viewpark, Blantyre, Hamilton and as far afield as Glasgow and Lanark it’s fair to say that there is nothing parochial about them.
The group, re-established in 2006 has gone from strength to strength and now has waiting lists for young people wishing to join the adventure. For Scouts aged 6 years through to 25, they offer a world of exciting opportunities and experiences both at home and abroad. What many people don’t realise is that modern multi faith Scouting has been available to girls as well as boys since 1976!

As an adult there are always opportunities to become engaged and whilst there is a considerable fun element involved there are also some serious benefits to being a leader or helper. Craig Borthwick, Group scout Leader said “Building a CV for work nowadays can be a difficult business for anyone. Recent surveys have shown that evidence of voluntary activities in the community make job applicants stand out from the crowd. As a training organisation we are fortunate that our Association provides formal and accredited training for adult volunteers which crosses over into work life in everything from first aid to management skills”

“I’m all too aware that many people are sadly put off lending a hand to organisations involving children because of the perceived “red-tape fear” but the Association have been doing this for years and the stream lined procedures in place now are excellent” explained Beaver Scout Leader Donald Wilson “we are fortunate that we have a group of leaders that means no one person will ever be without support. Your current skills could help the group in many ways that you may not realise” To reiterate that fact, Craig Borthwick finished by saying “It may be that you have an interest in hill-walking, are passionate about a particular hobby or were a former Scout who remembers just how much Scouting did for you. It may even be that you have some time on your hands and would like to support our Group “behind the scenes”, whatever your reasons we’d love to hear from you and discuss options that we could all benefit from”

With the Group also on the verge of an exciting refurbishment and extension of their current base in Clyde Avenue which will see it become a modern venue capable of hosting everything from ceilidhs to conferences they hope that readers of the Hub can find the time to get in touch.
